How can I get my flash drive to retain data?
Sep 19th
Question by theresalinton@att.net: How can I get my flash drive to retain data?
I have a new 16g Kingston drive, which I used to back up my 20g PS3 to put my game saves and downloaded videos onto my new 320g HDD. However, when plugging it back in, no files could be found. All the correct folders were created for the backups, but they were all empty. After several more attempts to figure it out, I just resorted to using my 1g Lexair drive to move things in small amounts, figuring it may just be a PS3 thing. Now, however, it seems it may be the drive itself. I’ve been using MWP to rip songs from CDs directly to my drive, and while verifying they exist in the folders prior to removing the drive, they are no longer there when I reinsert it, only the base folder (that is, WMP will create a hierarchy of Bush>Sixteen Stone>WMA file, which I can see, but when I reinsert the drive, the WMAs and the Sixteen Stone file are gone, leaving nothing beyond the initial Bush folder). I have discovered that if I move the audio files from the Album folder to the drive’s root, they will be retained when I next insert the drive. And to answer the obvious questions, yes it has been formatted to FAT32, and yes, I always click “Safely remove hardware” before removing it. Any thoughts/suggestions on what I can do, if anything? (Other than “Kingston sucks” advice, that is lol!) Thanks!

If the flash drive is locked then it wont keep the information. Make sure it is unlocked before trying to put information on it or retrieving information from it. Lock it when not in use that’s the only thing i could think of that would make it not hold the information.

How To Prevent Losing Your Photos, Music and Games When Your Hard Drive Decides To Die!

How To Prevent Losing Your Photos, Music and Games When Your Hard Drive Decides To Die!
Nearly every home has a computer. And on that computer nine times out of ten you will find photos, music or games.
Imagine if your hard drive suddenly died and the data was lost and could not be recovered!
Precious photos, large music collections, games with saved levels gone forever!
During my time as a technician I have had customers ask countless times, “Please save my photos” or “I won’t lose my music will I?” The majority of the time they can be recovered, but why take the risk.
Making a backup of your data is a good habit to get in to and is easy to do.
You can choose to make your backups several different ways.
DVD. If you already have a cd/dvd burner in your computer all you need are some good quality DVD’s or CD’s and some software and you can start building a collection of photos or your favorite music. There are lots of suitable programs available to do this.
Removable USB hard drive. These are becoming more popular as sizes increase and price drops. Make sure that the size, in gigabytes, is large enough to handle all the data you have now and for future backups. But remember, if a 300 GB drive full of data fails you have lost a LOT.
Internal hard drive. By adding a second hard drive to your computer you can store a copy of your data on it, but remember that it is prone to failure as well.
I recommend that you use DVD’s. Organize the backups so that all your music is on one and photo’s on another etc. Always keep the disc in a case and store them in a safe place.
It’s also a good idea to copy game discs as well. PS3, XBOX, WII games are quite expensive so it pays to have a backup in case the originals are damaged.
If you are not backing up your games, photos or music then you should start now, it could save a lot of heartache in the future.

Is there any way to back up a Playstation 3 format hard disk drive with a PC?
Sep 14th
Question by David: Is there any way to back up a Playstation 3 format hard disk drive with a PC?
My PS3 died (original 60GB model). I had upgraded the drive to a 320GB, so I swapped it back out for the 60GB that came with it when I sent the system to Sony for repair. When the replacement system came I put my 320GB drive in it and learned that any hard disk that has been formatted for one PS3 system cannot be used on another PS3 system until it is reformatted!
Of course they recommended that I back up the drive before sending the PS3 back to them but A) There wasn’t anything wrong with the drive B) I didn’t send them the drive I was using and C) The PS3 WAS BROKEN so I couldn’t run the backup utility!
Sony didn’t warn me that this would happen, otherwise I’d have tried to fix the thing myself, at least so I could get it working enough to run the PS3 backup utility. As it is, my son is going to come home from school and learn that all of the Little Big Planet stages he and I made together, all of the videos he made with the PlayStation Eye, and all of our save games are trapped in this little HD and we can never access them again.
All I need is some piece of software for a PC or Mac that can read this PS3 hard disk drive and make a backup of the data that I can put on an external hard disk and restore to my PS3. Does any such utility exist?

I don’t believe so, but it doesn’t hurt to look around. The high security encryption the PS3 console uses is used on the hard drive as well, so a PC or Mac won’t understand it, despite being in FAT32. As far as I know, nobody has cracked this so a PC or Mac can read it.
Don’t wait for the console to break before backing up. You’re supposed to back up in case the console breaks.

Can’t seem to get XP to read, notice or fix my external hard drive…?

Question by Kevin R: Can’t seem to get XP to read, notice or fix my external hard drive…?
I have had a Maxtor 5000LE External Hard Drive (80GB) passed down to me from an old friend. I used it mainly for songs and videos, but stopped using it over time.
I had recently tried to reformat it under FAT32 so I could use it for my PS3 for backup files and game data. I couldn’t format it under anything except NTFS. I looked around on the internet for a solution, and downloaded fat32format. Used that, and it was able to successfully change my hard drive from NTFS to FAT32. I unhooked the hard drive from my computer, plugged it into my PS3, and started to copy songs. After about 4 or 5 minutes, it abruptly stopped, stating that there was a disk read error.
Quickly, I returned the hard drive to my PC, only to find that the computer recognizes that it was plugged in, but I couldn’t see it in My Computer, Disk Defragmenter, or even Disk Management. I can see it in Device Manager, but that’s as far as I can go with my computer skills.
Is there any way I am able to salvage my external hard drive, or have I just turned it into a big paperweight with a blinking light?
I am not able to format it with My Computer or Disk Management, as the hard drive does not show up on anything except for where you can safely remove hardware and Device Manager.

I dont believe that XP reconizes FAT32 drives. format it as an NTFS and use a USB hub to connect all three devices…

Q&A: Hacking Nintendo Wii using hard drive?
Sep 11th
Question by ynoR: Hacking Nintendo Wii using hard drive?
How do you hack the Nintendo Wii? My friend has a hacked one but he did it in a different way from what I did. He has some sort of computer hard drive/driver connected and is able to play backup games on it. How do I do it that way? The way I did it was using only an SD card but wasn’t very successful into playing any Nintendo Wii backup games. (Before anyone says anything, I already have an Xbox 360 and PS3 so no need for any hateful Nintendo Wii comments. Just wanna hack it so I can use it for other stuff like homebrew.)

Omg thats exactly what im doing, but ima sell my wii and erase the harddrive, and then try to get an xbox and use the hard drive for the xbox, ok well this is what you do, you can go out to a store and get a 1 tetrabyte (1000GB, the average game is like 4-6GB) for , then you connect it to one of the ports in the back, im not sure which one, try both, load your games into the hard drive by connecting it to the computer, or, if you homebrewed it already, you can go to like the back up loader thing in homebrew, and theres a button, you load your game into the wii, hit the button, and it copies it to the wii, then you can take the disk out…and play….

When the PS3 has a new game installed into it it takes up space…
An example when you install in Grand Theft auto to the PS3 it might take up a couple g’s.
I think what is taking up all your space is your game data, not save data.
To check in the XMB menu, go to game —-> game data —-> click triangle on a game and then click info, to see how much space it takes up.
