Yes you can copy your data but that would be considered piracy and hacking but I did it anyway and I did not get caught.

Playstation 3 troubleshooting?

Question by John Stigerwald: Playstation 3 troubleshooting?
My Ps3 got the YLOD yesterday, and it is out of warranty. My problem is that I want to keep my game saves and other media so I can play them on my new Ps3 that I get in a week. However, the old PS3 will not turn on, so therefore i cannot backup my game saves. Also, I have learned that other Ps3′s will not recognize a hard drive it itself has not formatted. Is there any way to back up the files on the hard drive without having to use a PS3? I was thinking about using a hard drive enclosure and connecting that to the new Ps3, but I do not know if that will work. The data on the hard drive is critical, and it is very important that I can keep this data. Any tips will be happily welcomed. I have done some research on various forums and sites, but none have told a way to do it without a PS3. Thank You

I had the MFBLYOD too, the only way that you can save the precious game saves and media is to rip the old HDD out and put it in your desktop comuter via a SATA cable, this does unfortunatly mean, if you don’t have a custom PC (where you can plug the HDD straight into your computer while keeping it together) you are pretty much going to have to take your PC to bits and put in another SATA cable and wire that up to your PS3 HDD as well as your computer HDD, it is a lot of hassle and i didn’t think it was worth it as sometimes the HDD can be virused which can lead to the YLOD and i didn’t want to take that chance when i got YLOD… sorry guys
Sony will repair it for a fee of £95 where they MAY be able to keep the game saves etc on it, however this can take up to a month and a half to get fixxed, you can also get a refurbished console from sony for £150 within a few days… its up to you…

The money you spend on a 16gb flash drive can be spent on a 160gb portable HDD. The only thing you have to do is to make sure that any storage device you use is formatted FAT32 so that the PS3 can recognize it. I would spend the extra 20 or so bucks and buy a portable external HDD. Either choice will get the job done however.

If I once pay for a game on PlayStation Network, can I always just download it w/o having to pay for it again?
Sep 14th
Question by Kristijan: If I once pay for a game on PlayStation Network, can I always just download it w/o having to pay for it again?
I’m new to PS3, PSN and all that stuff, so I’m asking this in case something happens to the system, or to it’s hard drive (resulting in loss of data), or if I delete the game and then one day want to play it again, or if I exchange the hard drive with a bigger one w/o making a backup of the games and data stored on the current one, or if I want to play the same game on a newly purchased PS3 unit – if some of this happens, and I want to play a game that I had already payed for once before (on PSN, of course), do I have to pay for it again, or can I just download it from the download list (or whatever it’s called), signing in as the same user, of course??

Is there any way to back up a Playstation 3 format hard disk drive with a PC?
Sep 14th
Question by David: Is there any way to back up a Playstation 3 format hard disk drive with a PC?
My PS3 died (original 60GB model). I had upgraded the drive to a 320GB, so I swapped it back out for the 60GB that came with it when I sent the system to Sony for repair. When the replacement system came I put my 320GB drive in it and learned that any hard disk that has been formatted for one PS3 system cannot be used on another PS3 system until it is reformatted!
Of course they recommended that I back up the drive before sending the PS3 back to them but A) There wasn’t anything wrong with the drive B) I didn’t send them the drive I was using and C) The PS3 WAS BROKEN so I couldn’t run the backup utility!
Sony didn’t warn me that this would happen, otherwise I’d have tried to fix the thing myself, at least so I could get it working enough to run the PS3 backup utility. As it is, my son is going to come home from school and learn that all of the Little Big Planet stages he and I made together, all of the videos he made with the PlayStation Eye, and all of our save games are trapped in this little HD and we can never access them again.
All I need is some piece of software for a PC or Mac that can read this PS3 hard disk drive and make a backup of the data that I can put on an external hard disk and restore to my PS3. Does any such utility exist?

I don’t believe so, but it doesn’t hurt to look around. The high security encryption the PS3 console uses is used on the hard drive as well, so a PC or Mac won’t understand it, despite being in FAT32. As far as I know, nobody has cracked this so a PC or Mac can read it.
Don’t wait for the console to break before backing up. You’re supposed to back up in case the console breaks.

My Playstation 3 Won’t Load Games?
Sep 11th
Question by TDawg: My Playstation 3 Won’t Load Games?
I have read pages and pages of people with the same problem, here is how it happened for me.
I was playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for a few hours one night. My CoD4 is the Game of the Year Edition, and was purchased three weeks prior to when my PS3 became corrupted. The next morning, I went to play it some more and had put the wrong disc in. I quit it right after the PS3 logo had appeared from the Cross Media Bar. It went to a gray screen and said Error #(Random Numbers Beginning With 8), Disc Could Not Load. I figured it was a minor problem and put in CoD4 and it didn’t load. I restarted it first, but that didn’t work. I then turned off the system from the Main Power Switch in the back and turned it back on but sadly that also failed. I put in NHL 08 and it loaded, so I figured there was a glitch or something and I put in CoD4 and it didn’t load. I decided just to play NHL then, but it didn’t load. Every time I would put a game in it would show the loading icon in the top-right corner of the Cross Media Bar screen but would never load the disc icon. Basically, the system new there was something there, but never attempted to read it. It’s been doing it for three days now, and from what I have read, I’ll need to buy a new one. Is there anything I can try besides the following?
Restoring the Hard Drive and Losing my Files (No Backup Drive)
Waiting for Sony to Ship me a New One
Buying a New One
